Nero fiddled while Rome burned
There is a very popular myth surrounding the great fire of Rome that occurred in July 18 to July 19 64. It is said that Nero fiddled as he watched Rome burn and even benefitted from it by using the cleared land to build his new palace. However, Tacitus said that this was only a rumor and Nero had been at Antium during the time of the fire. He said that Nero actually helped the victims of the fire by organizing a relief effort which he paid using his own funds. He also opened his palaces to provide shelter for the homeless.
